Pear Gin Fizz

Tips & Tricks:

  • Simple Syrup: When making the syrup you are not looking for it to reduce you just need to extract the juices from the pear and have all the sugar dissolve. Wait for the syrup to fully cool before adding it to your drink otherwise you will have a warm drink.
  • Vanilla: To get a more concentrated vanilla flavour you can replace the corn syrup and vanilla extract with a pre made vanilla syrup.
  • Pears: Bartlett or Anjou pears are the best for this recipe as they will breakdown the most when cooking. You can use other varieties of pears but they will likley impart less flavour since they can’t breakdown as well.
  • Making It In Advance: I recommend making the syrup in advance and storing it in your fridge for up to a week. The rest of the drink however should be assembled just before consumption to maintain the carbonation. These cocktails are also better served by the glass rather than in a pitcher.

In need of a nice pretty looking cocktail? Or maybe you are just a big fan of pears. This pear gin fizz is a delicious option.

Ingredients

  • Pear Vanilla Syrup
  • 1 cup finely chopped/blended pears Bartlett pears work best

  • 1/2 cup organic sugar

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/4 cup corn syrup

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • To Make One Cocktail
  • 1 1/2 oz Gin about 3 Tbsp

  • 2 Tbsp pear purée syrup

  • 3/4 cup soda water

  • Crushed ice to top

Directions

  • Start by finely dicing or blending your pears. Then add the pears, sugar, water, vanilla, and corn syrup to a small saucepan and place over medium heat.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook about 6-10 minutes until the liquid becomes an amber colour and the pears are breaking down. Stir frequently while the pears are cooking.
  • Remove the mixture from the heat and strain the syrup into a container. Use a spoon to press any remaining liquid out of the pear solids.
  • Don’t discard the pear solids they make a great snack. Use the strained syrup for the cocktail recipe. Alternatively, you can blend up the pear solids into a puree and use them in the cocktail for a stronger pear flavour. Then, let the syrup cool to room temperature before using.
  • To make the cocktail add 1.5 oz of gin and 2 tbsp of pear vanilla syrup to an 8 oz glass and whisk together. Next, add ¾ cup soda water. To finish, add ice to top and stir. A rim of sugar and vanilla bean around the glass makes a great addition to this drink. Add a slice of pear into the glass for garnish as well. Enjoy!
