Brown Sugar Glazed Salmon

Tips & Tricks:

  • Salmon: Use skin on salmon so that the pieces will stay more intact when flipping them over in the pan. Remove your salmon from the fridge 15 minutes before you are ready to cook so it can come to room temperature.
  • Pan: Use a cast iron pan to cook the salmon so that is gets a really good sear. A no stick pan will struggle to get the same browning. I like to use this cast iron pan. Once you place the salmon on your oiled pan leave it alone until it is cooked 3/4 of the way up the side of the fish.
  • Glaze: Make sure to turn your heat down to medium when adding the glaze otherwise you are at rick of burning it. Keep swirling it or basting it over your salmon to help prevent the glaze from sitting too long. Sugar has a tendency to burn very easily.
  • Sides: Serve with some rice, quinoa, broccoli or any vegetable you desire.
  • Storage: Keep leftover in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 2 days.

Tangy and sweet brown sugar glazed salmon is a flavourful and quick dinner for any ocassion.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil

  • 1/2 Tbsp butter

  • 4 (4 to 6 ounces each) skin-on salmon fillets

  • salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

  • Brown Sugar Glaze
  • 1 Tbsp melted coconut oil

  • 2 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp low sodium Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar

  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger

  • zest of 1 lime

  • juice of 1 lime

  • fresh ground black pepper to taste

  • chopped fresh cilantro or parsley, for garnish

  • sliced green onions, for garnish

Directions

  • Start by removing your salmon from the fridge so it can come to room temperature.
  • Heat a cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Melt your butter and olive oil in the pan. Swirling to coat the entire bottom of the pan.
  • Add your salmon fillets to the pan, skin side up. If you salmon doesn’t have skin this is okay it will just be more delicate. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes. Do not move the salmon until you have noticed the colour change up the side. (if you are using a small cast iron pan do this cooking process in batches so the pan is not overcrowded.
  • In the mean time assemble to glaze by mixing all of the glaze ingredients together in a small bowl. If the coconut oil starts to solidify you can microwave the glaze for 30 seconds.
  • Flip the salmon fillets and allow them to cook from another 34 minutes.
  • Once the salmon is done cooking pour the glaze over top and lower the heat to medium. Swirl the pan to keep the glaze moving and get even coverage over the fillets. You can use a spoon to baste the glaze over the top again.
  • Flip the fillets to coat and then remove the pan from the heat.
  • Garnish with sliced green onions, parsley and even lime wedges. Enjoy!
